The tub bearing helps to keep the inner tub spinning smoothly. If the washer is noisy during the spin cycle or is leaking from the bottom of the tub near the transmission the tub seal and bearing are likely defective. Washing machine makes loud noise during spin cycle issue can also be due to the faulty drive pulley. If you detect a large amount of play this would verify that this is the failure causing your banging noise.

It could be simply worn out or just loose. Replacing the tub bearing is a very involved repair and will require disassembling most of the washer. Most drive pulley are either made from metal or plastic. The pulley is what the belt if applicable to your washer rides on to spin your washers tub.

If your drain pump is damaged or clogged your washer may make a loud noise periodically during the spin cycle. A washer making a loud noise during spin cycle can also be caused by a faulty drive pulley. And as long as you ve got the machine torn down to replace the spin bearing might as well replace the tub seal assembly while you re at it because the leaking tub seal is probably what made the spin bearing go bad. Remove the drain pump and clear any obstructions that could be restricting the drain pump.

The pulley can be made of plastic or metal. To verify this failure open the washer door and push up on the very front edge of the spin basket inside the washer tub.
